Exercise of the week (17)

1v1 Duel Drill – Reaction, Speed & Finishing

For this week, we have prepared a dynamic training drill focused on 1v1 duels, with an emphasis on reaction speed, quick role changes, and finishing in game-realistic situations. The exercise combines coordination, speed, and competitiveness, developing both attacking behavior and immediate defensive reaction after losing possession.

Objective:

  • improve 1v1 attacking and defending duels;
  • develop reaction speed and competitiveness;
  • train transition from technical action to game situation.

Required Equipment:

  • flat markers (cones);
  • 2 speed ladders;
  • 2 mini goals;
  • multiple footballs.

Players:

  • squad divided into:
    • attackers;
    • defenders.

Players rotate periodically so everyone experiences both roles.

Exercise Description:

The setup is organized as shown in the diagram.

The blue player (attacker) starts with a short passing combination with the red player (defender).

Immediately after the passing sequence, a 1v1 duel begins:

  • the attacker tries to score in the main goal;
  • the defender attempts to win the ball and score in one of the two mini goals.

Progression

Players start from the left and right side of the mini goal, each with a ball.

Both players begin at the same time by:

  • dribbling toward the speed ladder;
  • performing ladder exercises (forward and backward).

After the coordination phase:

  • both players try to score in the mini goal.

Once they finish:

  • both sprint around the cone;
  • the player who scores first becomes the attacker;
  • the other player becomes the defender.

A 1v1 duel then starts with the same rules as the basic version.

Special Situations

The coach can create additional reaction situations by playing a ball 8–10 meters ahead of both players.

The first player to reach the ball becomes the attacker.

Possible situations:

  • both players miss the mini goal;
  • both players score at the same time.

Coaching Points:

  • Aggressive reaction – attack the ball immediately after the trigger;
  • Explosive first steps – gain advantage early in the duel;
  • Decision-making in 1v1 – attack with confidence and defend aggressively.
