Football. Fewer isolated moments, more dynamic and interconnected moments
Marcelo Santos: It's been a while since I started seeing football differently, less as isolated moments and more as something dynamic and interconnected. It's not just a theory, but a perspective that has helped me understand training, decision-making and the structures we create.
This way of thinking has changed how I coach, how I lead, how I listen.
Football isn't just a game where individuals move in isolation. It's a living system. One where meaning is created between players, not just within them. Where the quality of interaction matters more than the quality of the parts.
A team doesn't work because everyone is talented. It works because the players adapt to each other, because their movements, decisions, and intentions are constantly shaped by what others do. This is when form becomes function. Not in static roles, but in the dynamics between them.
Structure is still important. But not as a rigid template.
The goal is not to control every action, but to create conditions in which useful interactions can occur. This could mean adjusting spatial references, manipulating task constraints, or simply knowing when to let things unfold. Systems don't need micromanagement—they need consistency.
You can't isolate problems and “solve” them in a vacuum. A failure to press isn't always tactical; it could be relational. Timing. Communication. Misaligned intentions. In a system, a small change can echo everywhere. So you learn to listen not just to the error, but to the environment around it.
Training thus becomes about designing interactions, moments when principles come to life, when players don't just repeat patterns, but build an adaptive understanding. Because in complex systems, repetition is not enough. Value lies in variation, connection, synchronization.
What happens on game day is not the result of isolated sessions. It is the result of weeks of shared context, micro-adjustments, players learning how to move together, solve problems together, adapt together.
