We believe that if you want to gain the trust of your players it is essential that you do not ask them for things that you cannot give them:
- if you ask them to be on time, make sure you're ahead of them;
- if you ask them to take care of their things, you take care of yours;
- if you want them to work hard, you work with them;
- if you want them to be honest, create an honest atmosphere;
- if you want them to play a certain way, you have to explain it to them in a way they understand.
These can be about:
- problems, situations encountered during training, matches, etc..;
- problems, situations in your personal life.
In a senior team it is very important to have discussions with young players.
Alex Ferguson said "If I was running a company, I would always want to listen to the thoughts of the most talented young people, because they are in touch with the realities of today and the prospects of tomorrow".
Here are some key qualities that I think you need to show to your players in order for them to believe in you and gain their trust:
- commitment and passion, if you want your team to give their all, you have to be passionate about it too;
- honesty and integrity, without it, no real success is possible;
- good communicator, until you clearly communicate your vision to your team and explain/show them the strategy to achieve the goal, it will be very difficult to get the results you want;
- decision making skills, decisions made by the coach based on sound arguments have a great influence on the group of players;
- creativity and innovation, a coach has to be creative and innovative at the same time;
- empathy, understanding players' problems/feelings.
